Questions

Submitting Photographs

Who can submit photographs?

Anybody who has registered an account on Irelandscape. That you are Irish resident or just took some photographs during a holiday makes no difference.

What kind of photographs are you looking for?

This site gives focus on scenic images promoting Ireland. That is landscape, seascape or cityscape pictures giving the viewer a feeling of what the photographed place looks like. The main subject of these photographs should be the location itself. People, constructions or animal photographs are fine as long as they clearly localize these subjects in their environment.

Photographs should be of high technical quality and pleasant to look at. That is, submitted images should be sharp, properly exposed and benefit from an interesting composition.

Above all, Irelandscape is craving for images of places that are usually not photographed and are hard to find in travel guides or on the Internet.

Which photographs do not qualify?

In general, photographs that do not depict a geographical area in Ireland or are of too poor quality. Extreme close-ups, abstracts or blurred photographs are examples of such images.

Photographs should not suffer from digital manipulation to such an extent that it looks un-natural. There could be exceptions such as the addition of one or two starbust effects in street lights, or an occasional digital sun flare. kEEP In mind that a photograph could be rejected if the moderator finds that the applied digital effects remove the natural looking aspect of the photograph.

In general, conventional digital ameliorations, such as exposure, tonal corrections and sharpening masks are perfectly acceptable. Just use them with moderation.

If you are in doubt whether or not a photograph of yours qualify for this web site, just submit it and we can discuss further about it.

What are the restrictions on the size and format of submitted photographs?

Photographs should be in JPEG format and should not exceed 200 kilobytes and should be between 500 and 900 pixels wide for landscape format and between 400 and 600 pixels high for portrait format.

The width to height aspect ratio is up to you, so your are free to use panoramic or any other format.

Can I use visible watermarks for submitted images?

Irelandscape understands the concerns that most photographers experience when publishing their images on the Internet.

For this reason, Irelandscape accepts submission of digital images with visible watermarks.

Note however, that visible watermarks must be unobtrusive and should not alter in a significant way the overall quality of the image and the experience of the viewer.

A small watermark with the copyright of the author at the bottom of the picture is fine. A large watermark that spreads all over the image would result in the submitted photograph to be rejected.

Keep in mind that the primary objective of this web site is to make everybody enjoy the beauty of our country through high-quality images.

I am aware that this policy might put off some photographers to submit their photographs on Irelandscape, but Irelandscape favors quality over quantity.

Digital Watermarking: An alternative to visible watermarking is the use of embedded digital signatures in image files. This technique is called "digital watermarking" and provides an elegant way to help preventing image copyright infringements without affecting the appearance of a photograph. Several companies provide software solutions which allow you to embed your own signature in your files, like Digimarc™.
Like all watermarking mechanisms, you should be aware that digital watermarks are not flawless, though.

Finally, note that Irelandscape cannot be held responsible for copyright infringements that would affect photographs published on this site.

How do I submit a photograph?

First, you must be logged-in before you can submit a photograph. This means that you should register a new account, if you haven't done so, yet.

Is there different user levels, and what are they?

Yes, currently there are two different levels of membership. This makes only a difference for members who want to submit photographs for publication. These two levels are REGULAR and TRUSTED.

The difference is that REGULAR users must first submit their photographs to a moderator before this image can be published on the web site. If the moderator finds that the photograph does not fit the criteria mentioned above, then he shall initiate a private discussion with the submitter so as to help the submitter to rectify the problem, if possible. Once the problem is resolved, the photograph along with its comments, location description and so on, is published on the site.

On the other hand, TRUSTED members have the possibility to publish their photographs on this site, without having to submit them first to a moderator. The moderator still reserves the right to remove a photograph published by a TRUSTED member that would not fit the theme of this site, and initiate a private discussion with the submitter, in a similar manner as with a REGULAR member.

All members are given initially the REGULAR level when they register an account. They acquire automatically the TRUSTED level once they have successfully published 7 of their photographs.

The webmaster reserves the right to bring back a TRUSTED member to the REGULAR level if he finds out that the TRUSTED member regularly posts photographs that do not feet the above criteria.
