The first thing to do is to get to Caherdaniel which is marked on the map. From the village you can go to either Derrynane and actually walk the beaches and visit Derrynane House or else ask for directions to Lamb's Head and the road that winds down this headland gives amazing views looking across the beaches towards Derrynane House and Bay. It is worth getting out of the car and climbing up the headland for some elevation. If you make it to the top of the headland (15 minute hike) you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Kenmare River, the Beara Penninsula and Derrynane Bay. Another option is to take the road from Caherdaniel towards Waterville. At the top of the mountain pass there is a car park with what is claimed to be Ireland's most famous view. On a clear day it is spectacular. You can see West Cork, Derrynane Bay, Abbey Island and the Skellig Islands.
Description:

It is surrounded by mountains to the North and the Atlantic Ocean to the South. Derrynane Bay itself is surrounded by beautiful rocky headlands and is dotted with Islands of varying sizes. The Skellig Islands can also be seen in the distance, to the West. Nearby the main beach is Derrynane House, once home to Daniel O'Connell, 'The Liberator'. The house is in beautiful condition and it has amazing grounds and gardens. Both the house and gardens are open to the public. The reason I like this area so much is because it has remained relatively unspoilt and every change of perspective, whether it's climbing to the top of a headland or driving up a mountain road gives you a different beautiful view on similar surroundings. Worth visiting any time of the year as each season brings its own particular light and conditions.
